Episode 16

April 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

This week’s show starts off with a bit of discussion about the comic that Mav has been working on for the past few months, Cosmic Hellcats. Mav is set to launch the comic at the Pittsburgh Comicon next weekend. If at all possible, he will be shooting his segment of the show on location, but if not, we’ll be having a special guest on the show next week with Stephen.

Mav did a tutorial this week after a bit of a hiatus and talked about the rule of thirds, one of the most basic compositional guidelines. This also led into James’ tip of the week, which discussed using negative space as a dominant element of composition.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

We had another great week last week, with a ton of people participating in the Close Crop challenge.

This week’s winner was a photo by thehalfshow.com.

Stephen and Mav also talked about this image, by Mikey aka DaSkinnyBlackMan.

And this one, by Lividfiction, was also mentioned.

Flickr has proposed some fixes to the group moderation issues, and those were discussed in this week’s show as well.

With two great tutorials on composition in this episode, we are expecting to see some creative photos submitted to Picture of the Week this week. The theme is Rule of Thirds / Negative Space. You can concentrate on one, or try and do both in one shot.

See you next week!

With all of the controversy about the addition of videos to flickr, and the reformatting of group administration, this week’s show opens with a discussion about both of these issues. Members of the 365 Days group had the chance to weigh in last week on their feelings about video being included in the project, but the decision was fairly unanimous that video be kept out of 365 Days.

As far as the permissions, flickr is forcing us to either boot out members who are not deemed as ’safe’, or allow those members and make the group 18+, and not visible to the world outside flickr. This will also restrict our membership, and underage photographers will no longer be allowed to participate in the 365 Days group. Mav has been voicing his opinions on this issue pretty loudly, and appears to be getting his voice heard.

Stephen received some mail this week - a moo card from mickeysacks, who was on the show to talk about making photo books with Blurb, and a cool doodle from disco~stu.

After a tutorial on using diffusion, James Bruntz was back on the show with this week’s tip. With the help of his lovely wife, James discussed using cropping to improve composition, and create more dynamic images.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

The podcast mini-challenge theme last week, Dramatic Lighting, inspired a ton of fantastic photos from members of the 365 Days group. The winner this week is a shadowy photo by dm74.

Our runner-up photo is from Mr. Fun., who used his dramatic lighting for a less intense effect.

We also had a viewer request a list of tutorials and the episodes in which they appear. This list will be up on the site as soon as we get the information together.

The show ended with a video Stephen put together over the weekend, to show that video on flickr can be a good thing.

This week’s Picture of the Week theme is Close Crop, so put James’ tips to use!

Until next week!

Episode 14

April 8th, 2008 · 1 Comment

After some major hardware malfunctions, this week’s podcast is finally posted!

The show opens with a tutorial on shutter speed, where Stephen Poff demonstrates the benefits of both fast and slow speeds. He talks about using a slow shutter speed to create the ‘light writing’ effect as seen in his photo for April 2nd, and uses a fast shutter speed to capture motion, like in a jumping shot.

After the break, James Bruntz (aka Sick Little Monkey) joins Mav and Stephen to introduce his tip of the week, which will now be a regular feature included in the podcast. (Especially since on it’s own, the tip of the week seems to get MORE hits than the podcast itself… hmmmm…)

This week, James talks about how to use dramatic lighting in self-portraits, like he does in his Mr. Sinister set. He demonstrates how to do this using simple lights that can be purchased from any hardware store.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

Since we talked about TTVs on the show last week, the podcast challenge theme was Frames and Borders. This week’s winner of Picture of the Week was Xelia, who called in to the show for the Valentine’s Day episode.

When you visit her stream to congratulate her, as I’m sure you will, also wish her a happy birthday!

The runner-up for this week’s Picture of the Week was a really creative shot by Sungazing.

We also wanted to add that in last week’s episode on TTVs, we neglected to mention the original founders of the TTV group, as pointed out to us by the real Queen of TTV, sadandbeautiful (Sarah). Mr. E. and Russ started the Through the Viewfinder group on flickr, which is full of great tips and tutorials for anyone interested in TTV.

Enjoy the show, and we’ll see you again next week! Don’t forget to take a picture or two this week using dramatic lighting to submit to Picture of the Week!

James Bruntz, aka Sick Little Monkey, will be doing a regular photography tip for you guys and this got in a little late to include it into the regular episode. But it relates to TTV and it’s definitely worth giving a watch… especially for the new snazzy theme and opening animation ;-) .

Check it out!
