Good to see Jessi has the traditional Flickr definition of “soon” being anytime in the next 4 years (seeing as there are at least three episodes worth of notes not yet up). Sorry, not trying to be TOO snarky, but if you’re going to take something over after complaining about it not being done…

Well, Stephen is supposed to send me emails with a point form rundown of what the show notes are supposed to say, and he’s been busy and hasn’t gotten that to me in a while.

I’ve also been busy lately dealing with immigration stuff, and since this isn’t a paying job or anything, it sort of gets put on the back burner.

I want to add a little something to what Stephen was explaining just after James’ tutorial.

If there is an area of the texture that is affecting the overall shot that you are unhappy with, for example a speck near or on the eye, Stephen suggested a few techniques. The first was just using the eraser tool to remove what you don’t want. Effective but when you erase something, its gone. If you regret it later, you can’t really do much about it. The second option was to drag the texture layer around to make to undesired area fall somewhere else. And the third idea was to clone the area from a better source so the problem is eliminated.

Again these are all decent ideas. The step I would choose is to use a layer mask. Layer masks are non destructive. You are not permanently removing any pixels. You are simply hiding or revealing the layer. To hide portions of the layer you are on, “paint” with black. To show the layer you are working on, “paint” with white. You can even “paint” with various shades of gray to give you a different range of opacity in a certain area.

Now, when using layer masks in other blend modes besides normal, you will get a slightly different effect. This will have to be something you just keep tyring until you like the result. In the long run, if you decide you want to bring the texture back, its still available. If you erase it, it is gone.

    Sorry this was so long.

    Great show this week guys!
